Sunset Music Festival came back with a bang and it was another success for this three-day extravaganza. As in years past; SMF took place outside of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. With over 30,000 beautiful people coming all over the world to attend the festivities to see many of the top DJs and producers in the industry with headliners including Gordo, ILLENIUM, Dom Dolla, John Summit, Dillon Francis, and Alesso. The four stages this year consisted of the Sunset Stage (Main Stage), Horizon Stage (House Stage), Eclipse Stage (Bass Stage), and the Cool Down Get Down Stage. There were plenty of vendors, shaded areas, free refillable water stations, cool-down stations, security, performers, and attendees adorned in costumes roaming the grounds.
Friday started off with a bang as I set off to the main stage to catch ARMNHMR kicking-off the festivities set as many attendees were entering the gates. The DJ duo hailing from Los Angeles set the tone for Memorial Weekend with their blithesome set and dropped some originals including “Fragile” and “Falling Apart”.
Gordo (Carnage) Formerly known as Carnage, Gordo’s set was the perfect “sunset set” bringing the House stage to the main stage. Gordo had the people vibing and shuffling to his set.
As the day went on, one of the acts I was excited to see was Gryffin. Gryffin is always a crowd favorite and he got the crowd bumping and singing to some of his most notable tunes such as “You Were Loved” and “Feel Good”, and when he dropped a “Mr. Brightside” remix it got the crowd pumped like they were in a karaoke college bar.
To conclude day one, ILLENIUM hit the stage strong. Between the combination of his melodic music and visuals playing on the giant LED screens, his set was very memorable. He played many of his own hits including “Blame Myself”, “Hurts Like This”, and “Don’t Let Me Let Go”.
The second day was a stacked line-up even after Skrillex backed out a few weeks prior. After recovering from an unforgettable day one, we began our second day at SMF with another Florida native, EVALUTION. We interviewed EVALUTION on getting started, playing in his hometown, and what it takes to be a successful DJ/Producer (interview coming out soon).
John Summit was one of the most talented people we’ve seen in a long time. His visuals, personality, and music selection set an amazing vibe as the sun was setting in the city of Tampa and he had one of the best sets all weekend.
At the Horizon Stage, Dom Dolla put on a show like nobody else. He has a huge following, knows how to hype-up a crowd, and put on an amazing show. The environment he set felt like a backyard house party and it was so much fun playing tracks including “Take It”, “Pump the Breaks”, and “San Frandisco”. It was my favorite set of the entire weekend.
One of the most anticipated artists I was looking forward to seeing all day was Valentino Khan. His set was full of plenty of his original tracks including “Deep Down Low” and “Pump”. Valentino had the crowd going wild and singing to all his tracks as he as his hilarious visuals mesmerized the crowd during his set, he by far has the visuals in the industry.
Another fan favorite was Dillon Francis. Dillon always some of the most eclectic and entertaining sets, he played Trap, EDM, House, and Moombahton as the sun was setting on the main stage. Some of his tracks included “Get Low”, “Lost My Mind”, and “Say Less”. He even brought out Valentino Khan during his set when he played their new track together, “Move It”.
WOW! WOW! WOW! Dabbin’s finale set was one for the ages. He brought everyone to euphoria and kept the vibe going from start to finish using his CDJs and live guitar to entertain the crowd. Much of the crowd was singing, crying, and in an emotional state as his songs played as the fireworks shot into the sky as he played during his final song.
After attending SMF for the tenth consecutive year, it was one of the most memorable. Looking back on SMF weekend and seeing all the joyful and happy people back dancing to their favorite songs made it an experience I will always remember. I would like to thank Disco Donnie Presents, Sunset Events, the staff, labels, and all the artists for doing an excellent job with the event.
