Random! Unexpected! And crazy! Those were the three words Big Makk used to describe his music and DJ sets when I interviewed him in 2015 at EDC Orlando. Samisoni Koroitamudu (25) was an amazing friend, artist, DJ, and person – the type of guy who welcomed you with open arms whether he knew you for ten minutes or ten years. This morning, the city of Orlando, state of Florida, and the entire music scene is mourning the loss of Sam, he was one of three victims who tragically died in a single-car accident in Orlando, FL.
The young DJ/producer was born-and-raised in Orlando and he started spinning records at the age of 13 after being inspired by DJ Chino and DJ Nasty. He toured the country alongside the likes of Zed’s Dead, Keys N Krates, and Bassnectar. When he wasn’t touring he was hosting his popular local party “Shake n’ Bass” – one of the wildest weekly parties in the state he founded with Dr. Khan and ma-LESS.
Big Makk was one of the hardest and most influential producers, and his stacked portfolio showcased that. His songs have been on high-profile labels such as Mad Decent, Main Course, Dim Mak, and one of his tracks was featured on HBO’s popular show “Silicon Valley”.
Big Makk had a personal list of people he wanted to collaborate with that included Craze, Bassnectar, Mr. Carmack, and Kanye West. He was able to achieve all those collaborations except for Kanye – which was only a matter of time that was cut too short. Just last week, Big Makk, was announced to the EDC Orlando lineup, and he couldn’t have been more stoked to play in front of his hometown crowd.
Concluding my interview last year with Big Makk, I asked him if he had anything else to say, and in his humble and classic-self, he said, “I love my fans. When people come to me and say I am their inspiration it means a lot to me.”
This weekend, we are featuring nothing but Big Makk tracks and mixes. We will also republish our interview with Big Makk. We are aware there will be a few Big Makk benefit and memorial shows, we’ll keep you posted when we have information. In the mean time, a GoFundMe has been setup to cover the funeral expenses for Big Makk, gofundme.com/RIPBIGMAKK.
