From Boston to NYC and anywhere in between, Jay Free (a.k.a. Jason Friese) has rocked some of the hottest bars and clubs in the North East. From Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino to the Trump Taj Mahl in Atlantic City.
He’s been on the scene since 2001 and has held residencies at some of the hottest venues in CT. Jay considers his style to be a journey through sound, constantly playing vocals that will make you move your feet… His number one priority is
to ensure the crowd has a great time wherever he is performing. Jay’s exclusive mixes and the way he reads a crowd only add to that vibe.
How did you get the name DJ Jay Free?
Nobody could pronounce my last name growing up so it became my nickname.
How long have you been DJing and how did you get into the scene?
I’ve been a DJ for over 15 years. I got started in the club scene in 2001 in lower CT through my involvement with a few of the top local promotion companies. Now I have built that up to spending over 100 nights a year behind the decks.
How would you describe your style?
I consider my style to be Party Rock, I like to play popular vocals but with an up-tempo spin. I’ll play whatever to make sure my crowds have a great time
What is your weapon of choice: controller, CDJs, or turntables?
I go back and forth between two set-ups. One being a Pioneer DDJ-S1 controller with Serato Itch and the other being 2 custom Technics 1200’s with a Pioneer DJM-800 & SL-3.
You’ve played at some of the biggest clubs in the Northeast, where is your favorite place to play?
My favorite place to play would have to be the pool at Foxwoods MGM Grand for Liquid Sundays. It’s always a sell-out crowd and it’s all house music, all day.
What is your opinion on the sub-genres in EDM, such as Dubstep, Moombahton, Trap, etc…? Do you think it’s a fad or here to stay?
I’m a big fan of Moombahton; it easily allows you to integrate hip-hop into an EDM set. I’ve recently started to dabble in Trap and I like the space that the production allows for.
What has been your most memorable moment as a DJ?
My most recent memorable moment was a Foxwoods Liquid Sunday event with celebrity host Christina Milian. Previously, it had been when I DJ’ed the Connecticut Science Center’s after-hours mixer called “Liquid Lounge” for over 1,500 people.
What is in your DJ bag?
In my Mono 365 bag, I have my 13” MacBook Pro, my custom-painted Crane stand, a set of Dicers, a set of Shure 447 cartridges on Technics headshells, a monster power strip, an emergency cable kit, business cards, mix CD’s and #TeamJayFree wrist bands.
What is your favorite track(s) to play right now?
A few of my current favorite tracks are The PaperCha$er remix of Rita Ora’s “How We Do”, The Chris James edit of Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close” and Diplo’s “Express Yourself”
Who are some of your favorite DJs?
A few of my favorite DJ’s are Z-Trip, 2nd Nature, and DJ Enferno.
How do you get your music and how do you decide what tracks get played?
Besides being a member of DJ City’s record pool, I get tracks sent to me all the time from other remixers and producers. I usually listen to multiple versions of each remix to find the one that works best with my style.
What advice would you give to a DJ starting out?
Practice, Practice, Practice, then Practice some more! Offer to open up for a resident, it gives you great experience! Most importantly, be humble.
