Last Thursday night, the stakes ran high at the Union Transfer in Philadelphia, PA as DJ Trayze was crowned the Red Bull Thre3Style US National Champion after an epic DJ battle. DJ Trayze was one of the six finalists who were hand-selected to compete in this year’s US Championships amongst a thousand applications. The additional finalists included: DJ Boi Jeanius (Chicago, second place winner), DJ Jaycee (Atlanta, third place winner), DJ Ease (Las Vegas), DJ Mike 2600 (Minneapolis) and DJ Supagi (Seattle).
All the competitors performed dynamic 15 minute sets that incorporated multiple genres of music categories for the judges and the attendees. Ultimately the final contestant, DJ Trayze, delivered the winning set of the night, riling up the crowd with his bombastic choice of songs and masterful turntablism. Crowned the winner by a panel of judges including DJ Jazzy Jeff, veteran Canadian DJ Skratch Bastid, and 2015 Thre3Style World Champion DJ Byte, DJ Trayze reigned supreme with his originality, skills, track selection, personality and overwhelming response from the attendees. As the grand finale to the US Championship, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Skratch Bastid rocked the crowd in a collaborative set into the early hours of the morning as the event’s final headliners.
In addition to receiving the highly coveted title of Red Bull Thre3Style 2016 US Champion, DJ Trayze will now represent the United States in the 2016 Red Bull Thre3Style World DJ Championships in Chile, Santiago later this year from December 12th through the 18th.
Asked what winning the Red Bull Thre3Style US Championships meant to him personally, DJ Trayze became pensive and replied, “It’s really the validation. Not that anyone needs to be validated, but the guys that are in this and started it and built it and everyone who watches it – this is important. We’re keeping this culture and music alive, and we’re just setting this up so we can do this forever. It’s what it’s all about.”
Red Bull Thre3Style began as an underground experiment nine years ago in Western Canada. In 2010, the event went global for the first time, effectively changing the face of modern DJ battles by pitting ten countries’ top DJ’s against each other. Since then, Red Bull Thre3Style has grown to what is now the world’s largest DJ competition.
